Preface

By Tang Keyang

The character “生 (Sheng)” embodies an array of meanings including life, birth, growth, rawness, boldness, and so on.

This is a diary of Wu Hwa as a fugitive from reality as she introduces us to her search for growth, healing and rebirth. In short, this is her search for “Sheng”.

In the attempt to manifest “Sheng”, one could construct its structure, draft its organization, draw its body, or render its impressions. Yet Wu Hwa’s paintings linger between the four techniques; they are not confined by any of the four, yet they follow the ever-changing identities and emotions of the artist–like the infinite forms and presentations of organic lives, they are not bounded by any singularity.

Wu sees space as structure, spirit as the exercise of the mind, material as tracing, and time as arrangement – she combines these elements with the “l(fā)ife” of painting. Unlike architecture illustrations, Wu’s strokes exceed the limits of color, composition and shape; they create a space, a projection of the artist’s inner being; they map out the nature’s paths, and bring “formation” through the journey of time.

Henri Focillon once said that the style of art changes with time, but it is the life of the artistic form that transcends space, spirit, material, and time. Wu sees space as structure, spirit as the exercise of the mind, material as tracing, and time as arrangement – she integrates these elements with the soul of painting and projects her inner being with the strokes of her works.
