Six Keywords in documenta fifteen

TEXT:CAFA ART INFO    DATE: 2022.6.30

Screen Shot 2022-06-29 at 12.49.42.pngFrom June 18, 2022, to September 25, 2022, the 100-day documenta fifteen officially opens to the public. The Jakarta-based artists’ collective ruangrupa is the Artistic Director of this edition. They invited community-oriented collectives, organizations, and institutions from around the world to participate and work on sharing new models of sustainability and collective practices.

If browsing the official website of documenta fifteen carefully, the viewer may find a carefully prepared "Glossary" on one of the pages, which lists the rich terms from different languages and familiar terms used in new contexts. They make up the vocabulary of documenta fifteen, explaining its connotation. However, with the opening of the exhibition, these new vocabularies, new ideas, and new cultural samples that were first introduced into Kassel, gradually appear to be "unsuitable" and "inappropriate" in the historical context and artistic ecology of Europe, and the controversies that followed. In this article, CAFA ART INFO hopes to introduce the documenta fifteen through the following six keywords, in response to the expectation in the "Glossary" of "expanding the way language is used and understanding it as a tool to develop new ideas and perspectives”.

01 ruangrupa

“We want to create a globally oriented, collaborative and interdisciplinary art and culture platform that will remain effective beyond the 100 days of documenta Fifteen. Our curatorial approach strives for a different form of collaborative model for use of resources?—?in economic terms but also with regard to ideas, knowledge, programs and innovations.”

Unanimously selected by the international documenta commission, ruangrupa, a Jakarta-based artists’ collective, worked as the Artistic Director of documenta Fifteen. This non-profit organization promotes artistic ideas within urban and cultural contexts through the involvement of artists and other disciplines such as the social sciences, politics and technology. By doing so, ruangrupa offers an open platform on critical reflections and perspectives on contemporary urban problems in Indonesia.

“ruangrupa” is loosely translated as “art space” or “spatial form” in Indonesian. ruangrupa’s work is normally based on a holistic social, spatial, and personal practice that is deeply rooted in Indonesian culture, where friendship, solidarity, and community are largely emphasized. ruangrupa has organized diversified community-based art projects and runs an art space in the south of Jakarta. Besides, this art collective has participated in numerous international collaborative projects and exhibitions. When it comes to its encounter with documenta, as early as documenta 14, ruangrupa was involved with its Internet radio as a partner in the decentralized radio project Every Time an Ear di Soun, which connected eight radio stations worldwide.

02 lumbung

Translated from Indonesian, “l(fā)umbung” means “rice barn”. In Indonesian rural communities, the surplus harvest is stored in communal rice barns and distributed for the benefit of the community according to jointly defined criteria. Such a principle stands for ruangrupa’s living and working conditions and is practiced by interdisciplinary and collective works in art projects.

As for art and economic models, the concept of "lumbung" is rooted in the principles of collective, public resource sharing and equal distribution, and is widely used in art projects and exhibition practices. In documenta fifteen, ruangrupa introduced "lumbung" as a core value, trying to build a new sustainable development model and sharing collective experience, and invited community-oriented art collectives, organizations and institutions to participate in practicing the approach. For ruangrupa, lumbung is not a concept but a practice, which changes dynamically through interactions between people.

It is interesting to notice that a number of overworked employees cast doubt over the sharing spirit of art resources and collective creation brought about by “l(fā)umbung”. According to the report by The Art Newspaper, some documenta staff believed that this edition is the most intense they have staged. More than 1500 artists have been invited to show work, which means lots of extra red tape, from last-minute visas to readjusted wall labels, was required. However, the annoyance derived from the endless “l(fā)umbung” spirit does not seem to bother the artistic team.

03 Ekosistem

Ekosistem is another term introduced by ruangrupa, which is closely related to lumbung. Ekosistem is the Indonesian term for the ecosystem, developed in reference to, but not synonymous with, the ecological concept of the ecosystem. As the artistic director of Documenta Fifteen, ruangrupa invited documenta to be part of its ekosistem. Specifically, ekosistem herein describes collaborative network structures through which knowledge, ideas, programs, and other means are shared and linked.

Through establishing ruruHaus in Kassel as a local meeting point, living room, and laboratory, the artistic concept and practice brought up by ruangrupa engages intensively with the ekosistem of this city. Besides the development of the new sustainability models, this edition also intends to build a lasting relationship. Both the interpretation and practice of “l(fā)umbung” and “ekosistem” illustrate that the documenta Fifteen this year breaks the traditional, stable theme-based international exhibition model. Instead, it emphasizes the dynamic artistic participation and collective shaping that evolve together with lumbung. In order to achieve such a dynamic evolvement, many of the participating artists have adopted site-specific creation and art practice in residences and are keen on the settlement and transformation of public spheres. Environmental issues also appear in many artists' works. In a sense, this way of working has contributed to the expensive international logistics, but the growing list of artists and other workloads that come with it seem to have created some new troubles.

04 Art Collective

Due to the introduction of lumbung, an equally distributed production budget, and an amount reserved for a common “pot”, the documenta fifteen this year presents the unprecedented scale of the approaches and achievements of collective art creation, which also made this edition be characterized by "the most participants". Meanwhile, from the curatorial team to participating artist collectives, this edition presents a different perspective from the traditional west-centered issues and working methods in art circles. To this end, diversified samples that are based on local art practice are able to make their own voices heard.

05 Anti-semitism Controversy

Apart from the discussion of the participation and creation of art collectives, the anti-semitism controversy that first surfaced as early as five months ago has thrown documenta fifteen into a storm of public debate. In January, ruangrupa was accused by the Kassel-based "Alliance against antisemitism” of involving organizations that supported the cultural boycott of Israel or were anti-Semitic. With the official opening of documenta difteen, the controversy has not yet subsided but has intensified. After the opening on the 18th, the work "People’s Justice" by Yogyakarta, Indonesia–based collective Taring Padi, has been removed at the request of Kassel’s mayor Christian Geselle because it is considered to contain anti-semitic content. From being covered by a black drape to being requested to un-install, the work and its subsequent development have been concerned with and reported on by several media organisations.

55-1.jpg

Confronting controversy and accusation, Taring Padi, ruangrupa, and documenta officials have jointly made a statement to deliver an apology. Besides, the art collective Taring Padi has released a further statement to show their regret and apology as the imagery of their work has offended so many people, and they have recognized the specific meaning of the imagery in the historic context of Germany. In the statement, Taring Padi further elaborated that the imagery “is never intended as hatred directed at a particular ethnic or religious group, but as a critique of militarism and state violence”. In addition, the collective showcased their shock and sadness with the media furor that has labelled them as anti-semitic. On the same day, a panel entitled "Anti-Semitism in Art" was held.

06 Venues

documenta fifteen is not a fixed, curated exhibition that remains the same throughout the 100 days. Instead, the venues are constantly changing: they are places in which to meet, discuss, and learn. Members of the Kassel group of the BDA (Bund Deutscher Architecktinnen und Architekten) cooperated with documenta fifteen and created eight different Reflecting Points: temporary structures for resting, reflection and coming together.
