Cheng Center for Contemporary Art (CCCA) is very pleased to announce “Straight Light” exhibition, opening on December 16th, 2017, artist Tan Ping working as academic director. The exhibition brings together the representative works of Chen Liang, Huang Gonghong, Li Peng, Ma Shuqing, Tang Xiao, and Teng Fei, six artists in recent years practicing colourful-motif abstract art.

All of the six artists participating in the exhibition have studied in Germany – specializing in freepainting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, and being taught by Mr. Jerry Zeniuk. Their educational experiences have constructed a base for their interests in color, with different careers, and independent pursuits within art helping to develop more complete and distinct painting languages. Chen Liang’s work is filled with natural instinct, caring much about ‘the intuition and the synesthesia of rhythm’. Huang Gonghong ‘based on the visual factors of painting itself, to ask or answer any vision about vision, and finally implement it on the visual framework carried by materials’. Li Peng superimposes blue, orange, and grey with white. His creations are meaningful, philosophic but low profile, with a standard and self-restraint bringing ideal order into his works. Ma Shuqing’s works on canvas prove that it is not what color means, but what color is in time and space itself. As he described in the preface of the exhibition, “Color in a painting must go beyond the canvas, and take over its space around it. Without this aspect, a color is only a form of decoration. It will visually communicate with the space only if it breaks away from the meaning of given, and becomes an ‘object’ in itself.” For Tang Xiao, ‘The abstraction is a method of thinking and working, and is the imagination and feedback to the unknown world that we penetrate ourselves. Specifically, abstract paintings consist of body motion, tools and materials. The process of forming the picture is a record of the human controlling the tools, and changing the matter’s form in order to create a motion trail’. Teng Fei’s works take plexiglass as material and media, and mixes these beautiful shapes and various natural elements so freely, that we could fall into a state of reverie.

The exhibition will continue until 26th January, 2018.
