Behind the scenes, inside cinema, French-born, New York-based photographer Brigitte Lacombe is as well known as the faces she photographs. This summer, SC?P puts her in the spotlight, exhibiting some of her most widely known and admired photographic portraits.

With Inside Cinema, Lacombe brings you behind the scenes and face-to-face with some of the most famous names in the world of cinema. From the sets of Falling in Love (1984) to The Wolf of Wall Street (2013), from Dangerous Liaisons (1988) to The Aviator (2004) via The Talented Mr Ripley (1999) and many more besides, to the singularly striking portraits of the stars of these and other films, you will find the actors and directors we all know and love. As icons of the age, in their own distinctive ways they embody the dramas and roles, which define recent decades of cinematic achievement.

With a clear eye and a deft appraisal of her moments, Lacombe shows us how actors grow and evolve through time; Meryl Streep, Leonardo DiCapprio, Robert De Niro, and directors like Martin Scorsese, are revealed in portraits both official and candid, on set and off.

“I always create a very simple, pure, and protected space,” Lacombe says. “To sit for a portrait leaves you vulnerable. It’s intimidating, both for the sitter and the photographer. The person has to be able to be open and trust you and to let you look in.”

Brigitte Lacombe’s career started at the Cannes Film Festival in 1975. It was her first time at France’s major cinema event but she instantly caught the attention of several influential filmmakers. By 1984, Lacombe had moved to New York, where she remains based today. In the late 1970s, she was already working as special photographer in the US, and would go on to work on the sets of films by leading directors such as Martin Scorsese, David Mamet, Spike Jonze, Alejandro González I?árritu and Quentin Tarantino among others.

Ever since, from her uniquely intimate side of the camera, Lacombe has enjoyed unusual proximity the world of cinema. The insight gained as a result is evident in the photographs of the actors and directors who have shaped this world in recent decades and are brought together for this exhibition.

“Lacombe|Inside Cinema” presents 40 intimate portraits and scenes inside the filmmakers’ world are as striking as they are memorable.

Brigitte Lacombe continues to contribute portraits to Vanity Fair, The New Yorker, Time Magazine, The New York Times Magazine, Vogue, Zeit, The Financial Times Magazine and The Wall Street Journal Magazine, to name but a few. She was awarded The Eisenstaedt Award for Travel Photography in 2000; the Art Directors Club Hall of Fame "Lifetime Achievement Award for Photography" in 2010; and The Lucie Award for a lifetime "Achievement in Travel & Portraiture” in 2012.
