Poster of Daily Formalism

Formalism signifies an emphasis on form over content and meaning in art. It is often associated with abstract or minimalist art – art that is devoid of language outside itself. Daily Formalism showcases artists practicing in a tenacious yet provocative relationship with the legacy of formalism. Whether cynical, playful, political or pedantic, these works employ formalism as an antidote to the age of information. In this exhibition quotidian materials and media have hijacked this once purist tradition. How have pure forms been commandeered by our hyper-saturated cognitive and associative powers? In a post-everything environment with infinite choices why the sudden gravitation towards formalist tropes? What is formal and what is normal?
