For Sun Xun, “on painting” is a verb instead of a noun, so that the exhibition that is entitled “On Painting” has nothing to do with the style of Sun Xun’s finished paintings, but it is related to the limitation and pondering, suspicion and thought, question and study in the process of the creation.

For painting, what is its effect in the times of installation and video?

For painting, how many possibilities between realism and abstraction there are, when it is feasible to draw anything by any form?

For painting, in addition to the pleasant sensation of writing, where does the thinking logic of real life stay?

For painting, under the influence and impact of the direct presentation of ready-made article and scene, what is the boundary of material for painting? Sun Xun has the consciousness of painter, he said, painting is to shape a body rather than depicting a body. He has many questions about what is painting, which can only be solved by the finished paintings and the process of painting. On painting, has become the normality of the trial of concentrating on painting.

The exhibition is more like an exception for his paintings in this stage. Fortunately, we can see some clues through the exception and we sincerely look forward to the exploration of “on painting” by Sun Xun in the future.

About the artist

Born in Majiang County in Guizhou province in 1970, Sun Xun graduated from the High School Affiliated to China Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) in 1990; graduated from the First Studio at the Department of Oil Painting, CAFA in 1994, with a bachelor's degree, and graduated from the Department of Oil Painting, CAFA, with a master's degree in 1996, learn from Mr. Jin Shangyi, and then he taught in the High School Affiliated to China Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA). In 2004, he finished the study in the First Senior Training Course by CAFA, and he was appointed as the Executive Vice President of the High School Affiliated to China Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA). He graduated from CAFA in 2007, won the first doctorate degree in practice, learned from Jin Shangyi, Shao Dazhen, and then taught at the First Studio in the Department of Oil Painting, CAFA; currently he is the Chairman of the Young Teachers Association in CAFA, Director of China Oil Painting Society.
