Poster of Before It All Starts

What is it like before it all starts? What does the audience expect? Vaguely, indefinitely, uncertainly… This exhibition aims to explore the original state of things. Nowadays, Chinese contemporary art has grown to confront unprecedented choices in diverse context. Different thoughts and paths challenge the artists. The exhibition presents paintings by Feng Lianghong, photography by Huang Lei, as well as a discussion held among Feng Yan and Wu Di + Soviet Pop on the border between photography and painting. Perhaps we could tell that the primitive and the natural are the most things worth to persist.

Whether in New York or Beijing, Feng Lianghong continues to discover and practice abstract paintings. Following meditation and its correspondent rules, he reveals various visual aspects and thinking spaces through his personal style; Huang Lei, an artist from Qingdao, insists to observe nature and lives. Through camera lenses, he perceives the versatile stages of lives with the passing of time. Feng Yan’s photography brings awareness to the seemly “insignificant” matters, which draws attention to the details of our daily objects; Wu Di’s works are mainly showed as paintings, collage and installation. Her works often suggest a sense of conflict, they are seen layered with multiple mediums and perspectives to form varied sensory experiences. Founded by Li Qing and Li Weisi, Soviet Pop is a duo of sound artists who use modular synthesizers, tape recorder and anything that make noises to express their interest in low frequency and the details of sounds.
