The famous contemporary US based painter Shang Ding’s oil painting exhibition opened at the Art Museum of Chinese Academy of Oil Painting on May 5 and will go through to May 15, 2015. The exhibition is jointly hosted by the Chinese Academy of Oil Painting affiliated to the China National Academy of Arts, Kunming Art Museum, organized by Art Museum of Chinese Academy of Oil Painting and co-organized by Yunnan IWE Investment Group Co., Ltd.

Shang Ding was born in Kunming in 1954, famous for the creation of “Continuous Fighting” which was finished when he was 20 years old. Shang Ding was once a famous military painter, he had successively learnt from He Kongde and Jin ShangYi,and then he was one of the first students to be admitted as a postgraduate student after the end of the Cultural Revolutionin 1978, he learned from Quan Shanshi. Following that he created a series of paintings on a military theme using a simple and pure language in oil painting to create a new perspective of military painting. This presented a complete, peaceful and true visual experience in the field of creation of military painting at that time. At the end of the 1980s, Shang Ding visited the United States and settled down there for more than 20 years.

The oil painting “April” by Shang Ding depicting the landscape of Dian Lake was awarded the American Art Awards. The oil paintings “Soldier” series, “Dai Girl” series,“Ballet Girl” series, “Museum” series and a large number of figure and landscape sketches were collected by many museums, galleries and private collections around the world.

It is the first retrospective of Shang Ding since he returned to China. The works include the far-reaching influential subject of the soldier as well as 103 days of sketching in Tibet after his return to China, where we can see the emotional expression of the painter who pursues the artistic spirit and the journey of the heart.

More than 100 works displayed at Shang Ding Oil Painting Exhibition basically represent the painting style of the artist. Thus the leading figures of Chinese oil painting Jin Shangyi,Quan Shanshi as well as the famous contemporary US based painter Chen Danqing wrote special articles for Shang Ding, and highly commended and evaluated the artistic achievement of his works.
