Presented by M+, the new museum for visual culture in Hong Kong, Mobile M+: Moving Images is the first glimpse of the museum’s moving image collection, its inaugural film programme and is part of its ongoing pre-opening public series Mobile M+. The multi-site project comprises a thematic screening programme and a two-part exhibition.
Inspired by the themes of migration, and more specifically the multiple connotations of the word ‘moving’ and the rise of diasporic cinema internationally, Mobile M+: Moving Images uses Hong Kong’s ‘migratory cinema’ from the 80s and 90s as a starting point to reflect upon how conditions of contemporary migration and displacement are expressed, imagined and represented through mediated images.
The two-part exhibition – Midtown POP in Causeway Bay and Cattle Depot Artist Village in Kowloon– features a diverse range of works by 24 Hong Kong and international artists and filmmakers, including CAMP, Paul Chan, Chen Chieh-jen, David Diao, Estudio Teddy Cruz, Simryn Gill, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, Isaac Julien, Kan Xuan, William Kentridge, Hassan Khan, Firenze Lai, Li Ran, Charles Lim, Anson Mak, Ellen Pau, Koki Tanaka, Wang Gongxin, Apichatpong Weerasethakul and Chai Siris, Wong Ping, Young-Hae Chang Heavy Industries, Yuan Goang-Ming, Zhang Peili and Zhu Jia. On the other hand, the screening programme presents over 30 narrative features, documentaries and artist films by Stanley Kwan, Nick Broomfield, Tsai Ming Liang and Apichatpong Weerasethakul, and more at Hong Kong’s Broadway Cinematheque until 19 April.
A series of learning programmes will offer a broader context for the project, including the Artists in Conversation taking place on 16 March with Chen Chieh-jen and Kan Xuan discussing their artistic practices in moving image with M+ curators Pi Li and Yung Ma. It will also include a special presentation by the art collective Young-Hae Chang Heavy Industries.
