In the early 1930s, Lu Xun (1881-1936), a leading figure of modern Chinese literature, initiated the Chinese New Woodcut Movement. In the support of Lu Xun, numerous woodcut societies were founded successively, and there appeared a number of young woodcut artists. Modern Chinese prints have been developed steadily since then.
By this year, there are approximately 90 pieces of Chinese modern prints in Long Museum collection, covering the printmaking works of some important Chinese artists. Lu Xun evaluated Li Hua’s woodcuts as “new path adventure” in a letter he wrote to Li in 1934. At that time, artists actively participated in the social events by means of woodcut under the premise of valuing artistic quality. As a result, this exhibition is named as New Path Adventure, and is trying to present the diversity of Chinese modern prints since the new woodcut movement.
