Hive ? Becoming” X: “Eye to Eye” Li Zhan Solo Exhibition opened at the Hive Center for Contemporary Art in gallery D, E at 4:00 pm on December 20, 2014. Li Tingting has been the curator. It will continue to January 20, 2015.

The artist Li Zhan has long been immersed in the exploration of sculptural ontology language, and enjoys it. He learned from Mr. Sun Jiabo in the academy, considering wood as the material for his language, which is a process in becoming familiar with wood during this period in pursuit of a master's degree. Taking portraits as the direction for research was the germinal and deepening of the statues of the portrait, after several years of honing, it has finally developed a round, exquisite and calm appearance.

Li Zhan’s working mode is developing a wood sculpture according to the potential conditions, a process filled with wisdom and imagination, cutting the wood several times with the axe, original relationships of shape then emerge. The later grinding provides an opportunity forself-talk,the management of shape and position, the balance of the square and the circle, and the delicate ups and downs of the faces are the result of countless conversations. Li doesn’t care about the literary process and episodic, and he intends to avoid interpretation, in his view, a good sculpture canbe exposed in the sunlight, while too much plots will weaken the power of the original sculptural form.

It benefits from the lack of plot and the simplification of form, the delicately carved face is like a beam that follows the spotlight coming from the stage, leading the audience’s eyes to focus on the calm, simple and intriguing face. Just as the artist expected,“wishing people have a dialogue with his eyes after seeing him.”
