Chengdu Art Museum launched Su Xinping’s first large-scale exhibition in Southwest China

Known as “one of the leading figures in modern Chinese printmaking,” Su Xinping has been active in China’s contemporary art scene since the 1980s, whose media of expression span from oil painting, printmaking, and video to sculpture. Hosted by Chengdu Art Museum, “Su Xinping” is the first large-scale exhibition featuring his works in Southeast China, and it is supported by Central Academy of Fine Arts and Tokyo Gallery + BTAP.

Featuring over 60 artworks, the exhibition provides an in-depth review of Su Xinping’s achievements in art, displaying his thinking and artistic expression on modernity and tradition, nature and city, nomadism and travels from an all-round and multiple perspective. Curator Cui Cancan stated that Su has constructed a frozen order of time and a moment imbued with surreal significance through his unique artistic approach, navigating among reality, imagination, and dreams.

The exhibition is divided into four sections: the first section focuses on “Modern Tribes”, with installations, horses and people symbolizing yurts, recalling the artist’s feelings about his hometown on grassland; the second section “Toward the Future” presents his artistic exploration, from lithograph in the early period to the recent large-scale installation “Walking Man”, which shows his observation of modern society and his vision for the future; the third section “The Magic of Language” is an innovative experiment by Su Xinping. Graffiti on paper are reorganized to break traditional ways and create novelty visual experience, reflecting his artistic exploration; in the fourth section “Ideals in the Wind”, Su Xinping tells his personal journey through his works, from the grassland to Beijing, integrating memories, ideals and pursuits.

Su Xinping was born in Jining City, Inner Mongolia, in 1960. He was enlisted in the army for military service in 1977. He graduated from the Painting Department of the Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts in 1983, and upon graduation, he taught at the Fine Arts Department of the Inner Mongolia Normal University. In 1989, he received an MFA from the Printmaking Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts and became a lecturer. From 2014 to 2022, he served as the Deputy President of the Central Academy of Fine Arts. He is currently the Director of the Central Academy of Fine Arts Academic Committee, professor emeritus, and doctoral supervisor.
