Magnetic Rose is an animated film produced by Katsuhiro Otomo. The film tells the story of a group of astronauts salvaging waste resources in deep space. While responding to a distant sound signal, the crew enters an imaginary world constructed by the memory of a long-deceased opera singer. The singer continues to “l(fā)ive” due to a computer simulating her memories according to her will, but eventually what remains of her is a vengeful, devouring body.
In many science fiction movies, unknown sound signals often appear and influence astronauts to step into mysterious realms. With hypnosis, people often use the ticking of a clock to suggest that the hypnotized person has entered another level of space, the space of memory and dream. In these contexts, the sound acts as a portal away from the “here and now”. When new media forms break the boundaries of the cultural memory, memories and realities are no longer as distinct as before. With the massive growth of digital data and information, will we still be subject to our own memories?
The exhibition attempts to create a third-person perspective for the audience. When they walk into a room, it feels like walking into the memory of a stranger. Like Freudian psychoanalysis, the audience is invited to listen, eavesdrop and collect the sound in the space.
Artist Yu Jing will set up a “broadcasting station” in the space to receive real-time audio information from the audience. Jiang Zhuyun’s work will convert sound signals into visual ones. Andrew Sunderland uses a highly synthetic fabric in his works. As sound passes through speakers from within, vibrations make this surrounding, synthetic material appear as flexible as the body. Each medium provides a unique channel for cultural memory. Egami Etsu will discuss the relationship between language and listeners in different cultural contexts. Charlotte Piene's work will invite two groups of audience members to enter a space to listen at the same time.
About Artists:
Andrew Sunderland (b.1986, UK) is a London-based sound artist with a master’s degree in sound art from Goldsmiths，University of London. In his works, he often combines sound with highly synthetic fabrics, which reflect the casual and speed of contemporary costume design. His selected solo exhibitions include, Infinite Diegesis (Gossamer Fog, London UK, 2017)?. Muscle Memory (ASC Gallery, London, UK, 2016). Jiang Zhuyun (b.1984) lives and works in Hangzhou and Beijing, China. As an artist, Jiang's art take on multiple forms such as installation, animation, drawing, experimental music, sound art and Audio-Visual work. Now he teaches artistic programing and sound basic tech theory at SIMA, China Academy of Art. His selected solo exhibitions include, If the End Precedes the Beginning (Boers-Li Gallery, Beijing, 2018). I Talk to The Wind (Hunsand Space, Beijing, 2016). Egami Etsu, (b. 1994, Japan) is a Japanese artist based in Beijing. In 2019 she received her master’s degree from the Central Academy of Fine Arts. Her graduate work was awarded and collected by CAFA Museum. Her selected solo exhibitions include, Chiba city government new star prize: Dialogue beyond 4000 years - Etsu Egami solo show (Chiba art center, Japan, 2018). In to the light.... Etsu Egami solo exhibition (βpace, Germany, 2017). Her selected group exhibitions include, The 2nd Beijing Media Art Biennial (CAFA Museum, Beijing, 2018). Yu Jing (b. 1989) is a sound artist currently based in Berlin and Hangzhou. She received her master’s degree of music technology at New York University in 2017. She is interested?in exploring the rift between the physical and the digital world, as well as (sur)real moments lying between space and non-space. From performance to installation, she tries to examine the aesthetic qualities of these gray zones. Her research focused on statistical analysis of hearing perceptions reacting to urban noise. Her selected exhibitions include, Border Resonance (Gray Cube, Goethe-Institut, Beijing, China, 2018). Delta 3.0 (Kunstraum PING?PONG, Leipzig, Germany, 2018). Charlotte Piene (b. 1985, Norway) is a composer and sound artist currently based in Oslo. She received her bachelor’s degree in composition in 2011 at Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo, and received her master’s degree in Fine Art at Bergen Academy of Art and Design in 2016. Her selected exhibitions include, Unheard Structures – Sound exhibition in collaboration with Anne Sofie Overgaard. (KH7artspace, Aarhus, Denmark, 2017).
