In the past ten years, Three Shadows Photography Award has been devoted to new trends of photography art, which focus on artists and artworks of independent spirit and artistic potential. It examines, documents and studies Chinese contemporary photography, and introduces China's avant-garde photography to the public, thus to promote the development of contemporary Chinese photography. Three Shadows Photography Award offers the world a window to get better informed of the diversity of Chinese contemporary photography and its forces.

With the group exhibition “Outward Expressions, Inward Reflections” by four young photographers in 2008, in the same year, Three Shadows announced to the public the Three Shadows Photography Award and works collecting for exhibition. Supported by its partners and all sectors of the community, the 2008-2009 annual selection and exhibition events were actively responded by many photographic artists. And the first photograph award exhibition was held under the title “Points of Impact”. Looking back the ten annual award exhibitions from “Points of Impact”, “Confluence”, “Myriad Visions”, “Crossover”,“Essential Impressions”, “Formless”, “Detachment” to “Immeasurable”, “Allegory” and “Interlink”, Three Shadows Photography Award has attracted over 5,000 photographers and artists globally and explored over 200 photographers and artists in the past ten years.

On this occasion, Three Shadows Photography Art Centre organized Ten Directions: The 10th Anniversary Exhibition of Three Shadows Photography Award, by selecting the most representative young artists in the past ten years to exhibit their works. Besides, they also invited Karen Smith, Gu Zheng, Iizawa Kotaro, Cai Meng and other international and domestic experts to write academic essays for the exhibition catalog. During the run of the exhibition, a series of seminars would also be attended by industry experts, artists and relevant people.

Ten Directions: The 10th Anniversary Exhibition of Three Shadows Photography Award narrates in a non-chronicle of structure to present the multiplex practice of Chinese young photographic artists in the past ten years. It is also a review and summary of the ten years achievements of the Three Shadow Photography Award. The exhibition will reveal the individual growth and self concerns of 38 young photographers and artists in a personal perspective. At the same time, the audience is invited to comprehend beyond the static definition of photography, to muse on the visual sensory that photography offers. It also sets a scene helping the audience understand how Chinese photographers and artists work with the media of “photography”, the orientation and boundary to push forward.
