“Print Summit – The Communication Exhibition of Print Works by Artists from the East and the West” opened at the Gauguin Gallery

“Print Summit – The Communication Exhibition of Print Works by Artists from the East and the West” is organized by the Gauguin Gallery, in cooperation with the Printmaking Department, CAFA, gathering high-quality prints by more than 60 Chinese and foreign artists, which are respectively displayed in three parts: “Dialogue across Time and Space”, “Inheritance and Revival”, “Radiance of the Cutting-Edge”. Director of CAFA Printmaking Department, Wang Huaxiang serves as the Director of the exhibition, Deputy Director of the CAFA Printmaking Department, Kang Jianfei and Dong Huiping serve as the curators, and Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the Fine Arts magazine Sheng Wei serves as the Academic Chair.

It is the first time that the prints by masters from the East and West are displayed in an exhibition. In part 1 “Dialogue across Time and Space”, it assembles the first-class artists from across the world such as Picasso, Braque, David Hockney, Chagall, Whistler, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Dali, Georges Rouault, Yayoi Kusama, Murakami Takashi, etc., along with prints by domestic artists including Gu Yuan, Li Hua, Yan Han, Li Hongren, Wu Biduan, Zhou Jianfu, Tan Quanshu, Wang Weixin, Xu Bing, Su Xinping, Tan Ping, Wu Changjiang, Wang Huaxiang, Ma Gang, Chen Qi, Gao Rongsheng, Zhang Guilin, etc. the second part “Inheritance and Revival” considers the Development of Printmaking at CAFA as the epitome, so as to systematically present the works by the teachers and students of the Printmaking Department, CAFA, in order to comb through the context of the inheritance of teaching and art style of prints from when the Printmaking Department of CAFA was established. It mainly features the talent cultivated by the Printmaking Department, CAFA, such as Fang Lijun, Yin Zhaoyang, Zhou Jirong, Yang Hongwei, Kang Jianfei, Li Xiaolin, Wen Zhongyan, Hong Hao, Wu Hong, Dong Huiping, Zhang Chunbo, etc. Through the works by the teachers and students of the Department of Printmaking, CAFA from the two parts, the viewers can learn the general context of inheritance. The third part showcases the prints by contemporary young artists.

The exhibition opened at the Gauguin Gallery, Wangjing SOHO-Tower 2-A-1211, and the opening ceremony was hosted by of Gao Aihong, Director of Beijing Gauguin Culture Media Co., Ltd., the specially invited guests included: Prof. Wu Biduan from CAFA, Ms. Li Jun, a member of CAFA Prof. Yan Han’s family, Ms. Li Yue, a member of Mr. Li Hongren’s family, Associate Prof. Zhou Lan, the daughter of CAFA Prof. Zhou Jianfu, as well as the well-known artists Xu Lei, Yin Zhaoyang, Lv Yue, Zhang Yanzi, Feng Mengbo, Li Xiaolin, Chen Xi, Chen Xuan, Yao Lu, etc.

“Print Summit” is a high-brow dialogue on the print works between the artists of the East and West and comprehensively presents the developing context and current situation of Chinese contemporary printmaking. It features both the classical works from history, such as Li Hua’s “Roars”, Gu Yuan’s “Burn the Old Land Title”, etc., and the only existing copies that are rarely seen, such as Gu Yuan’s “Office of the District Government”, Zhou Jianfu’s “Pear Flower Ditch”, etc. In addition, this part mainly presents the selected prints by foreign artists in the collections of the Gauguin Gallery, such as Picasso’s etchings “Le saltimbanque au repos”, Braque’s colored etchings “Pichet noir et citrons”, Chagall’s lithographs, David Hockney’s lithographs “Tyler Dining Room”, etc.

It is the first print exhibition to create a dialogue between Eastern and Western art, giving consideration to the international and inherited value, it is a full range, making the exhibition both academic and appreciative, so that the viewers have an opportunity to appreciate the prints from different civilizations, regions, times, ideas, styles in the same context of time and space, meanwhile they can understand that it is rational to generate artistic differences during the comparative study and learn the essential unity of the artistic ideal.
