On January 10, 2015, planned by the curator, art critic Wang Meng, “Image Study - the Logic of Presentation in the Wash and Ink Process” exhibition invited Chen Lin, Dang Zhen, Du Xiaotong, Gao Qian, Hang Chunhui, Jin Sha, Lei Miao, Li Geye, Li Jun, Liu Qi, Lv Peng, Qin Ai, Qin Xiuping, Sun Hao, Tan Jun, Tu Shaohui, Wang Yu, Xu Hualing, Xu Jiacun, Zeng Jianyong, Zhang Jian, Zheng Qingyu, Zhu Zhengming, a total of 23 artists who have explored the field of wash and ink, to present in the Rightview Art Museum Ink and Wash Studio Project during the first round of the exhibition.

The project aims, through the perspective of the art museum’s academic attention, to bring the“process of ink painting” within the ecologyof art into the frame for an academic inspection, extending the display function to a kind of “study”, so as to build on the art phenomenon that has integrated a number of ongoing cases, connecting the art ecology and the public image of the art museum, so that the art museum enters the “site” where art happens and performs as an “intervention” to some extent.

The exhibition hopes to become a “conversational” study, the curator Wang Meng makes a detailed analysis of the “history of the presentation” of Chinese Painting, putting forward a visual generating mechanism that combines the classical, modern and contemporary “image” of the three basic types. This includes “imagery vision”, “realistic vision” and “image vision”, to provide a conversational framework that connects the contemporary “site happening” and the “existed master standard” in history, using “exhibition” as the possibility for the “studying dialogue”, forming a practical conversation with the artists which creates a substantial context for discussion.The exhibition once again becomes a “cultural happening”, which makes the curating of the art museum a more active “interventional function” and offers a proper “activating effect”. Openly discussing the problem, instead of forming a school using “image” as the flag, this is the basic characteristic of the “Study Conversation”.

It refers to the “image” that in the artistic creative process takes wash and ink as a painting medium, to express a visual “image”, located within the “visual thinking” of the artists’ creation, under the action of a particular painting which uses the ink medium to present and generate the “image” of painting. Throughout the group of current active ink painters, Chen Lin, Dang Zhen, Du Xiaotong, Gao Qian, Hang Chunhui, Jin Sha, Lei Miao, Li Geye, Li Jun, Liu Qi, Lv Peng, Qin Ai, Qin Xiuping, Sun Hao, Tan Jun, Tu Shaohui, Wang Yu, Xu Hualing, Xu Jiacun, Zeng Jianyong, Zhang Jian, Zheng Qingyu, Zhu Zhengming, continue the classical “imagery” and modern “realism” in their unceasing exploration in recent years, sharing the vitality of wash and ink while searching for a new way for the “wash and ink presentation” of modern painting in a“cross-cultural context” of “contemporary art” which has changed from “modernism”, and through this “individual cases” gradually gather together to be a “phenomenon”, and even with “happening cultural situation” it is possible to further generate the logic of presentation. In the extended new context of wash and ink, it is the case that “cross-cultural” now has become the basic fact. The artists’ choice is free today, but after the choice is made a “new power” is forming.

The “Study Project” sets up 4 thematic dialogues, cutting to the site of ink painting from various levels of perspectives, to analyzeart issues in detail:

Image Study Progressive Project in the First Round: Critics Dialogue, Topic: “Academic Framework of Image Criticism”;

Image Study Progressive Project in the 2nd Round: Artists Dialogue, Topic: “Individual Context for Image Creation”;
