Exhibition Preface

Ever since 2012, Xu Xiaoguo has shifted his attention to the study of visual experiences from pure icongraphy and aesthetics. In his latest works, he uses materials with complicated spatial orders such as cages and plants to construct a solid research sample of the visual logics, focusing on the transition between volumes and sufaces, and the transformation between forms and backgrounds. These transitions could be interpreted as a shift of attention from meaning and aesthetics to the inner structure of the painting, re-structuring the process of painting as a way to weave volumes on a surface. "From Space to Texture" on one side directly describes the subjects of his latest series, on the other side refers to the hidden ideas and methods of the artist.
