Gallery Yang in cooperation with artist Li Yiwen presents the exhibition “Li Yiwen” on April 26, 2014. The exhibition will showcase the new work created by the artist from 2013 to 2014.
Statement by the Artist
In the painting process from 2013 to 2014, I gradually dismantled various factors in the painting (plastic, color, structure, space, perspective, brushstroke, etc.), and reviewed, doubted and reconstructed it. In the complex and difficult process, I continuously focused on reviewing and criticizing myself, as well as the moderate and prudent expression of personal temperamentand mood.
Excessively emphasizing any factor on the screen which alerts me I then repress it, I want to showcase a complicated and simple picture, where different factors are entangled, dragged, symbiotic and counteracted against each other, to promote and present the painting in a complex and diverse system.
I don't agree with a blind pursuit of and focus on style. I think the style is a struggle that repeatedly searches for the self from the inner dimension of the mind and constantly redefines the self with reference to external factors, insisting on definition even after constantly doubting, which naturally reveals a personal temperament.
About Li Yiwen
Li Yiwen was born in Luoyang, Henan Province in 1982, graduated from the Department of Mural Painting, CAFA, with a bachelor's degree in 2006, and graduated from the Department of Mural Painting, CAFA, with a master’s degree in 2011. Currently he works and lives in Beijing.
