From September 26 through to October 3, 2013, this year’s Beijing Design Week consists of seven main sections, namely the Opening Ceremony, Beijing Design Awards, Theme Exhibitions, Design Forum, Guest City and Beijing Design Fair(For further information please visit www.bjdw.org). The theme of Beijing Design Week 2013 is “Design City·Smart City”. Curated by CMoDA (China Millennium Monument Museum of Digital Arts), Smart City 2013 is the main exhibition at Beijing Design Week (BJDW) 2013 to be held from September 28 through October 13, 2013. With the theme of “Wisdom Lights the City”, Beijing Design Forum will be presented from 1.30-5.30pm on September 26, 2013 at the China Millennium Monument.

Beijing Design Week was initially launched together with International Design Alliance Congress 2009, which was the first to be held in China. It then becomes an annual event since 2011, not only helping to promote the cultural development of Beijing and its construction of “national cultural center” and “world-class city”, but also contributing to the Chinese capital’s application for the UNESCO title of “design capital”, which it earned in 2012. As a platform to present the overall strength of Beijing as a “design capital”, Beijing Design Week further establishes itself as a brand and stands as the only internationally recognized, A-level creativity activity in Chinese mainland, which is also included in the “global design map”; in 2013, Beijing Design Week puts much emphasis on “Beijing Design Fair”, integrating professional and social resources, supporting the development of design industry as well as Beijing’s construction of “design capital” and “smart city”.

The Dao of Being Smart: Smart City 2013 International Symposium

The Smart City 2013 Symposium "The Dao of Being Smart", curated by CMoDA, invites international and local standard makers, researchers, city government and industrial leaders to discuss the latest development of Smart City solutions. Smart City is an integrated urban development and management model based on information technology and orchestrated application systems. In China it is strategically attached to the development of new urbanization. The symposium investigates the R&D trend of Smart City solutions from the perspective of information design in the areas of sensing the city, urban planning, city management, public security, emergency response, smart community to smart living (environment, health and energy saving), to promote the cross-disciplinary collaborative innovation. The symposium elaborates how design thinking and approach are applied to the smart city development, a complex and cross disciplinary subject, with the aim to escalate the design industry to information design as future opportunity.

In addition, the symposium includes a mini-symposium "Made by Us", co-organized by CMoDA and The New Institute and The Mobile City from the Netherlands, to explore the use of new media technologies in a participatory approach to redeveloping urban industrial heritage.
