Visual Dialogue – Tommy Li and Exhibition of Works over 20 Years in Beijing

At 15: 00 on July 13, 2013, the third round for the mainland China of the “Visual Dialogue – Tommy Li and Exhibition of works over 20 years” was officially launched at the Beijing 1 +1 Art Center. The exhibition is a sublimation of the market designs by Tommy. After a year of careful preparation, sponsored by Swire Properties Limited, in Hong Kong in December, 2012, Tommy Li launched the largest scale solo exhibition in design history with a combination of brands and designs in Hong Kong, to comprehensively showcase to the audience in mainland China the 20 years of design process, in a 2000 square meters space, to re-examine the trademarks, brands, packages, posters, publications, advertisements and personal creations by Tommy over the last two decades, hoping to convey information through the images, building a “visual dialogue” with the audience. Since June 18, 2011, the curators Ho Ming, Bob Chen, Wang Hao have transformed the whole exhibition into touring exhibitions of mainland China, including Chengdu, Suzhou and Beijing.

Known for his unique design style, black humor and bold vision, Tommy Li established his individual design company, creating numerous works and winning lots of awards over the years. Japanese design magazine “Agosto” evaluated him as: “The most influential graphic designer in the next 10 years”. Under his brand diagnosis, many enterprises create myths, and he insists that the design serves are for commerce, “We are not artists, and we must think more about commerce. An idea should meet the needs of the customer, instead of casually clicking, like winning a prize at a lottery.” He said, “It’s so important to have a clear position for a designer, if he/she has a clear position and target, a lot of ideas will naturally be created.”
