On June 29, 2013, Eastation Galleryopened the Liu Xiaohui’s Solo Exhibition which features Liu’s recent paintings, including oil paintings, tempera and acrylic, etc.

For Liu, painting inevitably intermingles with aspects of his own life, becoming an extension of his daily activities; he is inspired and nurtured by the trivial and apparently unimportant “non-events” that populate his daily routine. In one series of small-format paintings, Female Models?(2012), focusing on female nudes, where Liu juxtaposes real and fictional elements, creating compositions suspended in a non-time and non-space position, where the female body, sometimes completely naked and sometimes covered with a blanket, is set against an almost aseptic environment.

What is so striking about Liu Xiaohui’s works is the apparent normality that they imply the fact that, the scenes portrayed may be so easily overlooked in everyday life, and the extremely natural, almost dusty and non-sensational color palette that is employed by the artist.

Liu Xiaohui has always been interested in plein air painting. Red Scarf (2013), Liu’s most recent works, which were completed during his last field trip to western China, were inspired by everyday scenes experienced there, this is a continuation of last year's Red(2012). In this body of work, a female worker is set against an infinite, desolate desert, wrapped in an atmosphere of simple and clear tone, offering a performance demonstrating his unique understanding of color. In this context, the loneliness of the subjects and the audience in some way reflect the artist’s reclusiveness which he needed to endure when he creates.
