In celebration of the 100th anniversary of birth of the great Italian artist Aligi Sassu, the largestretrospective of the artist abroad is going to be held at CAFA Art Museum from May 24 to June 18, 2013.

Aligi Sassu is one of the most remarkable Italian artists of the 20th century. His unique artistic language, full of the passion and colors of life, reflects the development of the entirety of Western art history of his era. In his works, one can detect the spirit of Futurism, Cubism, Romanticism, Primitivism and Impressionism, among other movements.

In 1956, as the team leader of the very first Western European art group to visit New China, Aligi Sassu came to Beijing together with five other Italian artists. Here, they visited well-known Chinese artists of the time, including the great masters Qi Baishi and Li Kuchan. Concurrently, they held an exhibition at the former CAFA Art Museum, causing quite a sensation in China’s art world. Wu Zuoren and Wang Qi, president and vice president of the Chinese Artists Association respectively, wrote articles about this exhibition, singing high praise for the work of the Italian artists. Fifty-six years later, the new CAFA Art Museum is set to hold the retrospective of Aligi Sassu, covering all his creative periods with more than 140 artworks on display. Paintings and manuscripts will not only offer a precious opportunity for knowing the art of Sassu, but will also afford Chinese art lovers a glimpse into the last century of Western art history.
