About Printmaking of Representative Works by Jin Shangyi

Text by Yue Jieqiong

Jin Shangyi is a well known educator and art master throughout the world, possessing a lot of honorable titles: Standing Committee of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, Director of Chinese Art Education Committee, Vice President of China Federation of Literary and Art Circles, Chairman of Chinese Artists Association, Honorary Chairman of Chinese Artists Association, President of Central Academy of Fine Arts, Director of the Academic Committee of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, a doctoral tutor, his preeminence is unmatchable. His works are beyond the general aesthetic, creating a perfect art that seems to be similar to nature but in fact beyond nature, displaying his excellent thinking and spirit, sculpturing “the noble”, so that when one is standing in front of his painting, he will feel a distance.

His works “Tajik Bride” was created in 1983, where he has combined the form and technology derived from the Renaissance and unique Chinese restrained ethos to produce the almost ultimately simple, quite, elegant and noble beauty that go beyond the mundane, like a peak appearing on the horizon. The whole art world vibrates with his bold and vivid lines, rigorous composition, sculptural clothing, a sharp contrast between shadow and light, and bright and firm tones, making him the first neo-classical master.

Jin Shangyi is a giant that opens historical pages time by time, as he has integrated the traditional noble style, quality of tolerance, and modern appearances of people into his work “Youth Singer” and “Fruits”, etc., in 1984. The union of Western oil painting techniques and Chinese ethnic essence has broken the boundaries of the time and space, so that it is possible to shine throughout the whole art temple with an aesthetic ideal and promotes the development of oil painting in China. He finished “Huang Binhong in His Latest Years” in 1996, using chic flat strokes, appearing after 19th Century, to sketch the literati artist in a freehand method. The ink and brush of Chinese painting, accomplished style of figures, and the expressive language are melted into a unit. He is beyond the ideal value of realism and offers great wisdom, he has stepped into the infinite abstract performance space, so that he is at a peak that is difficult climb. Jin Shangyi finished a sketch “Old Farmer from Yan’an” in one day of 2001, which is impossible to reproduce even himself and is one of the classics of art history, it gives birth to a new landmark with the vividness, conciseness, thickness of Chinese people, as well as a long history. In the same year, he created “Drunk”, with an extremely rare emotional expression, a viewer’s intuitive experience is extremely consistent with the expression of the figure that they feel is what she feels.

Jin Shangyi has been appreciated by generation after generation. This brilliant artist has pushed portrait painting to an unprecedented height. Although he has an outstanding reputation, he has never stopped developing and progressing, and although he is not a prolific painter, all his works are in the course of his exploration and creation. Sometimes he spends one or two years drawing a piece of work, each of which implies his deep understanding of oil painting. His portrait painting is good at mirroring the style of the era by depicting a person’s image, with a tolerant composition full of meaning, it has harmonious and changing subtle colors, while emitting a rich atmosphere of humane care.

There’s a common significance between this exhibition and “Jin Shangyi: Paying Tribute to Vermeer”, held in 2011, which is to reveal a law: Any act of the artist is working for his art creation.
