PENG Feng, curator of the Chinese Pavilion at the 54th Venice Biennale explains:

The Chinese Pavilion titled “Pervasion” was a great success at the 54th international art exhibition of Venice Biennale. As was reported by Global Times, "The Chinese Pavilion is, by far, the most innovative pavilion at the Venice Biennale this year. The ideas are fresh, the works are fresh. There's no imitating or replication. The philosophical concept and the aesthetic realizations, are all very well grounded," said Curtis L. Carter, former museum director and current president of the prestigious International Association for Aesthetics. "To me it's one of the more interesting exhibitions that I've seen at this or any other Biennale," he added.? President of CIHA, Professor Jaynie Anderson also believed that, the China Pavilion is the best one at Venice Biennale this year.

Since the art works exhibited in Chinese Pavilion are related to our whole five senses, only the audiences who have been to Venice can get the real experience of the works. To meet the demands of artists, critics, collectors, and audiences in China who could not visit Venice, the curator and artists decide to present the exhibition of China Pavilion again in the Enjoy Museum of Art, Beijing.

PERVASION is strongly associated with the Chinese cultural tradition (as opposed to the west's traditional focus on aesthetics): tea, lotus, liquor, incense and herbal medicine. The concept of five tastes, sweet, sour, bitter, pungent and salty, is one aspect of the five elements theory – the ancient belief that all things are composed of metal, wood, water, fire and earth. The artists in turn apply this to create exhibits that tantalize the five senses. The displays are all interpretations of this year's biennale theme, "ILLUMInations."
