Invited? by the Nivet-Carzon Gallery, architect and artist Ye Cheng who now lives and works in France holds his one-month solo exhibition from October 6th, 2011 in the area of galleries near the Pompidou Center. This exhibition showcases three series of Ye Cheng’s works: Ecotopia, installations; China Specimen: Circusee, sculpture and Physical Spirituality, painting. It is thus divided into three themes of utopia, dystopia and psychotropic substances.

Ye Cheng graduated from the Department of Earth Science, Nanjing University in China in 2001. He got enrolled in the Ecole spéciale d’architecture (ESA), Paris in 2004 and received his Masters Degree in 2008 with his graduation design being awarded the Best Diploma Award 2008 of ESA. He was also the first Chinese person to win the Encouragement Award for Youth Artists appraised and selected by Académie des Beaux-Arts. He has worked for the cutting-edge architectural firms as Jakob + Macfarlane Architects, Paris in 2008 and R&Sie(n) Architects, Paris from 2009 to 2010. He also serves as a researcher of the ENSAD LAB (Ecole Nationale Surperieur des Arts Décoratifs), Paris from 2010 to 2012.

As a typical cross-border artist, his works involve literarature, art, architecture, photography and other art mediums. He took part in many international design and art exhibitions such as Great Architecture, Institut de France, Future Design Exhibition Sponsored by Benz Smart Urban Stage, 2nd Biennale of world images PHOTOQUAI at Museum Quai Branly, France and other exhibitions at the Gallery Le Laboratoire, Paris, Center of contemporary culture, Barcelona and many others. In addition, he has attended academic conferences held at the Section of Education of Chinese Embassy in Paris, the Architecture Research Institute, Nanjing University, International Symposium on Electronic Art in Istanbul to promote his new ecological urban theory named Ecotopia. He advocates “the Rural Counterattack City” which encourages the introduction of eco-agriculture to the inner city, restructuring the existing relations of production and consumption which leads to his original conception of a citizenship society composed of “urban farmers” and “urban agriculture collective ownership”.
